Greek plurals in English

The plural of Greek words ending in "-on" is a word ending in "-a". Examples:

criterion - criteria

phenomenon - phenomena

The plural of Greed words ending in "-is" is a word ending in "-es". Examples:

analysis - analyses

crisis - crises

diagnosis - diagnoses

thesis - theses

hypothesis - hypotheses

parenthesis - parentheses

You can not therefore use one of these plurals with a singular word.

You may say "the criteria are", not "the criteria is".

You may say "these phenomena" but not "this phenomena".
